ALBANY, N.Y. -- Defenceman Ben Chiarot scored on a shot from the right point with 23.1 seconds remaining in regulation time, lifting the St. Johns IceCaps to a 2-1 victory over the Albany Devils on Friday in American Hockey League playoff action. The IceCaps, who lead the best-of-five series 1-0, got on the board 4:29 into the game with both teams down one skater. Jerome Samson, who played three AHL seasons in Albany, stole the puck behind the net and fed Eric ODell, who beat Devils goalie Keith Kinkaid between his pads. Joe Whitney tied the score for Albany on a power play at 2:13 of the second period. He received a pass from defenceman Jon Merrill and ripped a wrist shot from the slot area past the stick of IceCaps goaltender Michael Hutchinson. Hutchinson made 25 saves for St. Johns while Kinkaid turned away 30-of-32 shots for Albany. The series resumes Saturday night in Albany before moving to St. Johns for the final three games. DETROIT -- To no ones surprise, Patrice Bergeron, Jonathan Toews and Anze Kopitar are the finalists for the Selke Trophy, given to the NHLs best defensive forward. Bergeron of the Boston Bruins and Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks have each finished in the top three in voting for the past three seasons, and Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings was fourth last season. For Bergeron its an honour that underscores how much hes respected around the game for his two-way play. "I think youre always trying to work on things and I feel like the complete game is something that I take a lot of pride in and Im trying to work on," the Quebec City native said Thursday. "I think that this year I mean obviously I got the bounces offensively, but that being said it doesnt mean that I let the defensive part of the game out." Bergeron, who narrowly lost the 2013 Selke to Toews after winning it in 2012, has to be considered the favourite. His 1,015 faceoff victories were the most by any NHL player in the past seven seasons. "It makes you proud because you know hes well deserving of that, he has been for years now," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "Always up there in plus-minus, always plays against top players, and hes got 30 goals this year playing against top lines. I cant find a better candidate than him. Certainly deserves the nomination. Well see how it goes, but in our regards hes been the best." Toews, who thrived in a shutdown role as perhaps Team Canadas best forward at the Sochi Olympics, led the Blackhawks in ice time and won 57.2 per cent of his faceoffs. Kopitar played the most short-handed minutes of the leagues top 30 scorers and keyed the Kings top-rated defensive effort. Hes the first player in Los Angeles franchise history to be a Selke finalist. Detroits Pavel Datsyuk, a finalist last year and the winner in 2008, 2009 and 2010, missed a big chunk of this season with a knee injury. Tommy Robredo beat Djokovic, 7-6 (6), 7-5 before Federer escaped with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Gael Monfils in the night session. Andy Murray also came close to elimination but saved two match points in a 6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-6 (2) win over 11th-seeded John Isner to reach the quarterfinals. Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., and Fabio Fognini also advanced. On the womens side, top-seeded Serena Williams continued her pursuit of her first title in the Cincinnati-area tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Flavia Pennetta. Simona Halep also reached the quarterfinals, where she will meet Maria Sharapova. Agnieszka Radwanska, Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic also progressed. Robredos victory was the second time in his career he had beaten the worlds top-ranked player. The first occasion was way back in 2003 when he defeated Lleyton Hewitt in the 2003 French Open. "When I finish my career, and when I will be sitting at home and talking with friends, I will remember days like this," Robredo said. Djokovic, who has never won the Cincinnati-area event, dropped the first set after fighting back from a 6-3 deficit in the tiebreaker. Robredo took the set with an ace that Djokovic challenged. The replay showed the ball caught the slimmest sliver of the line. Robredo was denied on two match points before completing the victory with a smash on Djokovics short lob. "Its disappointing that Im finishing Cincinnati again with a tough loss, but its the sport," said Djokovic, who lost in the third round at Toronto last week. "I didnt play well in Toronto, didnt play well here. Hopefully, its going to be different in New York (at the U.S. Open)." Federer had trouble shaking off a persistent Monfils in his 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory. "There was some frustration, but thats what Gael does to you," Federer said. "I felt like I missed some opportunities in the second set to close him out, but thats a credit to him. He hung in there." Murray, who is coming off an injury-interrupted season, would have been expecting a long match against the towering Isner because the American is rarely broken on service and won before a standing-room-only crowd.dddddddddddd "I had lost a few close matches -- matches like that -- over the last few months, so it was important for me to come through," Murray said, a two-time W&S champion. "It was completely packed crowd from the first point right until the end, as well. So it was a really good atmosphere to get ready for the rest of the tournament, but also the U.S. Open, as well." Isner, who lost to Rafael Nadal in last years final, had two chances to win the match with a 6-5 lead in the third set, but Murray salvaged both points before taking control with a mini-break for a 3-1 lead in the tiebreaker. Stan Wawrinka shook off losing the first set to roll through the next two and advance with a 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 win over Marin Cilic. Wawrinka, the Australian Open champion, will meet unseeded Julien Benneteau in the quarterfinals. Benneteau eliminated Jerzy Janowicz 7-5, 6-1. Fabio Fognini also needed three sets to get past Yen-hsun Lu, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, and Milos Ranoic held off wild-card Steve Johnson 6-7 (6), 6-3, 7-6 (4). David Ferrer completed the quarterfinal bracket with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Mikhail Youzhny. In womens play, top-seeded Williams broke serve in the opening game and went on to comfortably beat Pennetta 6-2, 6-2. "I got the early break, and I didnt let go," she said. "Thats what I wanted to do. She tried to come back, I wanted to stay focused." Halep also reached the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Lucie Safarova, but 15th-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro was upset by unseeded Elina Svitolina, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Halep and Sharapova will meet in the quarterfinals -- a reprise of the French Open final won by Sharapova. The fifth seed advanced with a 6-4, 7-6 (2) win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Jankovic also moved on with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over Sloane Stephens, and Ivanovic advanced with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win over Svetlana Kuznetsova. Agnieszka Radwanska routed Sabine Lisicki 6-1, 6-1. Caroline Wozniacki reached the quarterfinals for the second straight time and third overall with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Angelique Kerber. ' ' '
PHOENIX - Aaron Hill drove in three runs and made a game-ending diving stop, Miguel Montero hit a two-run single in the eighth inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied for a 5-4 win over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night. Trailing 3-2 in the eighth, Detroit went ahead on Torii Hunters two-run single up the middle off Brad Ziegler. Eury De la Rosa (2-0) got the final two outs in the inning and Arizona rallied when Phil Coke (1-2) walked two in the bottom half after being hit by a line drive. The Diamondbacks loaded the bases on a two-out walk and Montero came through with his single up the middle off Ian Krol to put Arizona up 5-4. David Peralta tied a team record with two triples and Hill made his diving stop in the outfield grass to help Addison Reed work around a walk in the ninth for his 24th save. Arizona starter Chase Anderson won his first five starts and lost the next four before allowing a run on seven hits in six innings to beat Miami his last outing on July 7. The rookie right-hander wasnt nearly as sharp against the Tigers, though he was still effective. He allowed run in the first inning on Miguel Cabreras run-scoring single and another on a wild pitch in the third. Anderson worked around baserunners over the next three innings, but didnt give up another run against the ALs best-hitting team. He allowed two runs and five hits and struck out five in six innings. Detroits Rick Porcello bounced back from a rough outing by holding the Royals to a run in seven innings his previous outing. His main trouble against the Diamondbacks was their top two hitters, Peralta and Hill. Hill hit a solo homer in the first inning, his eighth of the season. Peralta hit triples in the third and fifth inning, setting up Hill for a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout that put Arizona up 3-2 in the fifth. Porcello was good against everyone else, allowing five hits and three runs with five strikeouts. DAMIAN LILLARD (Blazers): Caught his act in Toronto on Sunday versus the Raptors. Man, this kid can really play. Love his game. Excellent vision, wonderful change of pace/speed, good creativity, explosive first step and smarts. He shoots it well from behind the arc and is a crafty screen and roll guy. Has taken a nice step in year two and the best is yet to come. Point guards who can get in the lane at will and make others better are a must in todays NBA and Portlands got a guy thats a keeper. As Raptors Terence Ross (picked two spots after Lillard) mostly watched from the bench, Lillard was a load for his team to deal with. The luck of the draft - the Blazers got themselves a significant piece to build/turn their team around with. Hes Legit. 2. OMER ASIK (Rockets): Things are getting testy in Houston with Asik demanding a trade and hanging his head about the arrival of Dwight Howard. With this situation deteriorating by the day, it will get harder and harder for GM Daryl Morey to get significant value for him because teams will know that youre stuck and you have to move him and that lowers what you have to give them back in return. Asiks immature reaction to the events have made it more difficult for him to get moved. Get your head up and be a pro and go out on the court and play your tail off and youll get your wish. If not, Rockets are stuck taking back pennies on the dollar and will be boxed in. Not pretty. 3. LANCE STEPHENSON (Pacers): This man is going to get paid this off-season. Hes a free agent at the end of the year and his value is increasing day by day. He plays with great energy and determination and his overall skill set has improved beautifully. Averaging close to 14 points per game, as well as over five rebounds per game and five-plus assists per game. Really impressive and the fact that hes shooting the three Ball so well at 45 per cent is opening lots of eyes. I said this last year about Paul George and Ill say it now about Stephenson; the best thing that ever happened to him and the Pacers has been the injury absences of Danny Granger. Its truly allowed these guys to play through mistakes and have to carry a significant role early in their career and its paid huge dividennds.dddddddddddd The Pacers scouting staff deserves lots of credit for coming up with this second round gem, as well as for guys like George who was a 10th pick. The most underrated aspect of winning organizations is having great scouts who have the knack for evaluating/projecting and picking players. Another diamond in the rough while other organizations cant even get out of their own way. 4. KLAY THOMPSON (Warriors): Averaging close to 21 ppg and playing lights out right now. Look at his shooting numbers: - 51 field goal percentage and 55 three-point field-goal percentage. This man has wonderful shooting mechanics and has figured out how to get his game off with the dribble and can help you in the transition game as well as in the slower half-court style. When you watch a guy polishing his skills and getting the rough edges off his game its neat to witness and were seeing it here. Becoming one of the better young two guards in the League. A talented guy, yes, but more importantly he plays the game with the proper tempo and there is a method to his approach. Im a fan. 5. ZACH RANDOLPH & MARC GASOL (Grizzlies): Memo to coach Dave Joerger: stop listening to those goofballs who are whispering in your ear about pace of play and shooting more threes. I love these guys who think theyre smarter than everybody because they come up with all these fancy mathematical formulas to explain their clueless theories. Im a huge believer that for every ounce of intelligence you have you better have a pound of common sense to go along with it. Theyll be the same ones to fire you when the win-loss mark doesnt work out. Slow it down and pound the heck out of folks. On Sunday, I watch them punish Sacramento (I know--its the Kings) in the paint for a combined 41 points and 18 rebounds. Your teams strength is power basketball; rebounding, defense and winning ugly. Play to your strengths. This isnt a beauty contest. Sure everyone wants to run up and down and shoot threes and entertain. Beauty to me is finding a way to win games and that means hiding your weaknesses and playing up your advantages. Open your eyes and trust your gut and pure instincts and realize the reality of what youre working with. Dont outsmart yourself. ' ' '
LOS ANGELES -- The way things have been going for the surging Los Angeles Dodgers over the past seven weeks, they can afford to laugh at themselves once in a while. The NL West leaders -- Juan Uribe, specifically -- were victimized by a rare hidden ball trick Saturday during a 5-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. And they had a little bit of fun at Uribes expense in the clubhouse after the game. First baseman Adrian Gonzalez, who hit a two-run homer to support Zack Greinkes strong pitching, came over to Uribes locker and posed with a base that had a shoe taped to it. Uribe offered a stern look, and took the prank in stride. "Its a good play. They did a good job," Uribe said. "I made a mistake. Every day you see something different. Ive never seen it before. I got surprised." Rays third baseman Evan Longoria tagged out the unsuspecting 13-year veteran when he lifted his foot off the bag while chatting with coach Tim Wallach in the fourth inning. The rarely seen play occurred after A.J. Ellis hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly, with all three runners moving up as centre fielder Wil Myers threw toward the plate. First baseman James Loney wound up with the ball behind the mound. The former Dodger flipped it to shortstop Yunel Escobar, who then quickly tossed the ball to Longoria while no one seemed to be looking. "Its a play that I always have in the back of my mind through the course of a game," Escobar said through a translator. "Guys were going everywhere, so it happened to be a good situation where I thought we might be able to tag Uribe out. The umpire was standing there and knew what was going on right away, and the only one that didnt know what was going on was Uribe." "Ive tried it four or five other times this year and never got anybody out in the big leagues. But in the minor leagues, I got four or five guys out," Escobar said. Longoria stood behind Uribe and waited for the right moment to trap him. Umpire Angel Hernandez was right on the play, watching the whole time, and made the out call. "I know that Yuni is always looking to do it," Longoria said. "Usually when a play like happens, the pitcher is right around the mound and you dont have a whole lot of time before the umpires call time. I had just walked around behind Uribe, and Hernandez was still walking back from behind the plate to the mound." "I was just kind of waving my hand to see if Loney would see me, and he did. But he threw the ball to Yuni -- which was the best part of the play, because it was indirect. Once I got the ball, I just kind of waited there. He barely took his foot off the base and I tagged him. It really was the one highlight of the day for us." Dodgers manager Don Mattingly was just glad Uribes gaffe didnt affect the outcome of the game. The way Greinke was pitching, there was little chance of that. "Its something that you can laugh about now," Mattingly said. "But its like anything that happens in a game. Its something you should learn from. You want to make sure that it doesnt happen again in a big game." Greinke (10-3) scattered six hits through 6 1-3 innings, striking out seven and walking one. The 2009 AL Cy Young winner is 6-1 with a 2.49 ERA in his 10 home starts. "Obviously it feels pretty good, the way were playing," Mattingly said. "Our starting pitching gives us a chance to win every day." The Dodgers bullpen finished the job, lowering its ERA since the All-Star break to 1.89. Former Rays left-hander J.P. Howell retired both batters he faced in the seventh and rookie Chris Withrow pitched two scoreless innings. Skip Schumaker added four hits for the NL West leaders, who clinched another series and are unbeaten in their last 15 series (11-0-4) since dropping two of three at Pittsburgh in mid-June. Tampa Bay lost its fourth straight, matching their longest skid this year. Roberto Hernandez (6-12) gave up five runs and eight hits in four innings. Gonzalez ended a 16-game homer drought when he hit his 16th homer, a two-run shot, and later got his first stolen base of the season. Nick Punto had a two-run single in the third. One person said Wednesday that Golisano also has had talks with developer Scott Congel to be his partner in the potential ownership group. The person added that their discussions have included the proposal of building a new stadium in West Seneca, about a 10-minute drive from the Bills current home, Ralph Wilson Stadium. The people spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because Golisano has not publicly announced his plans. The land where the proposed stadium would be built belongs to Pyramid Management Group, which is owned by Robert Congel, Scotts father. The Syracuse-based company is one of the largest shopping mall developers in the northeast. A person at Golisanos office told the AP Wednesday that he has no comment regarding the Bills. Golisano also failed to return a message left on his cellphone. Congel declined to comment about a potential partnership with Golisano in an interview with The Buffalo News published on the newspapers website Wednesday evening. Congel did confirm he has made plans to redevelop the Shops at West Seneca land, which would include the potential of building a 60,000-plus seat stadium. The Bills are on the market after the teams Hall of Fame owner and founder, Ralph Wilson, died in March. Wilsons estate hired an attorneys and an investment banking firm last week to oversee the sale. They are expected to begin contacting prospective ownership groups by the end of next month. A new owner could be identified by as early as the end of July. The new owner would require approval from 24 of the NFLs 31 owners. New York City real estate mogul Donald Trump has already announced his interest in buying the team. Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly has also said he has had talks to partner with numerous ownership groups. Golisanos entry into the bidding process does not come as a surprise. He first discusseed the possibility of buying the Bills not long after purchasing the Sabres out of bankruptcy in 2004.dddddddddddd Golisano said he would especially become involved in an ownership group if there were any fears of the team relocating. Wilsons death has raised concerns about the franchises long-term future because of the possibility the team could be sold and eventually relocated to a more prosperous market such as Toronto. Golisano sold the Sabres in 2011. Later that year, he became involved in a group that failed in a bid to purchase the Major League Baseball Los Angeles Dodgers. The 72-year-old Golisano made his fortune founding Rochester-based Paychex, a payroll processing firm. His net worth was most recently estimated by Forbes to be at about $2 billion. Hes from Rochester, but now makes his home in Florida. He came to prominence in New York in the late 1990s, when he made three unsuccessful gubernatorial runs. Congel was previously a principal at Pyramid. He has most recently run into difficulties attempting to redevelop the Medley Centre mall outside of Rochester. The mall is now vacant. Earlier this month, The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported that Monroe County officials voted to declare that Congel was in default of his tax deal by failing to invest at least $165 million to redevelop the property. Pyramids holdings, by comparison, have been lucrative with the company estimated to bring in estimated $5 billion in annual revenue from its 17 properties. The land the Shops at West Seneca are located upon are partially undeveloped and on the site of a former mall. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said a new stadium would be the next step in securing the teams long-term future. New York state has also hired an architectural and design firm to identify between three or four sites across the region that could serve as the teams new home. The Bills are essentially locked into playing at Ralph Wilson Stadium through the end of the 2019 season under the terms of the lease the franchise reached with the state and county in December 2012. BEREA, Ohio -- Browns starting running back Ben Tate will miss this weeks home opener against New Orleans with a knee sprain, moving rookies Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell up the depth chart. Cleveland coach Mike Pettine said Tate "will miss some time." He did not provide any details on the injury and only confirmed Tate will miss Sundays game against the Saints. Tate was injured during the first half in the season-opening loss at Pittsburgh. In his absence, West and Crowell performed well in the second half. West, a third-round draft pick from Towson, rushed for 100 yards, and Crowell, an undrafted free agent from Alabama State, scored two touchdowns. Pettine said West will start in Tates spot and their play last week gives the coaching staff some comfort. "It was encouraging, but they need to be able to take the next step, and this is another challenge for them, to go against this type of defence and its nothing that either one of those guys have seen before," Pettine said before Wednesdays practice. "It will be a good test for them." Pettine also said Pro Bowl tight end Jordan Cameron reinjured his right shoulder against the Steelers. Pettine said Cameron and linebacker Barkevious Mingo (shoulder) will both be limited in practice and are day to day. Cameron landed on his shoulder after catching a 47-yard pass. Defensive lineman Desmond Bryant (wrist surgery) and offensive lineman Paul McQuistan (ankle) returned to practice and took part in drills during the period it was open to the media. Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Thomas was not at practice, and the team did not have a reason for him to be missing. Custom San Francisco 49ers Jerseys . My window looks out on the ocean, the three-time All-American running back from South Dakota State said Wednesday morning from St. Petersburg, Florida, but I havent been there yet. Oh, surely there must be time for some pleasure amid all the business. I just got done taking a Troutwine test, Zenner pointed out. Well then, that fun performance profiling surely reflected Zenners intelligence and intangibles such as competitive desire and mental toughness. Perhaps his reaction time on the test mirrored his acceleration on the field. A color will be spelled out, like the word red, for example, Zenner explained the psychological evaluation. But the color of the word red will be black. And youre supposed to identify the color of the word. You read red, but the color of the word is black, so you need to select black. Its all in a day in the life of a player trying to make a bigger name for himself at a college football all-star games. A player from an FCS program, like Zenner, has been a star for a while, but in the buildup to the NFL Draft in May, he has to overcome the stigma of playing on the smaller-school level. There are so many success stories, of course, but the perception still remains. Just this past Saturday, Coastal Carolina All-American linebacker Quinn Backus represented the FCS level well by claiming American team MVP honors with six tackles and an 87-yard pick-six at the Medal of Honor Bowl in Charleston, South Carolina. The three biggest all-star games are up next. The Shrine Game and the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in Carson, California, will be played Saturday, while the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, will follow on Jan. 24. Zenner will get a long look from NFL teams. What must be particularly intriguing to them is the 6-foot, 220-pound back is the only Division I player, and just the second in NCAA history, to rush for at least 2,000 yards in three different seasons. He has a patient, north-south style, but can find another gear in the open field, as evidenced by five runs of 75 yards or more in his college career. Hes also a solid pass catcher. Zenner is one of 11 FCS players at the Shrine Game. At last years game, an FCS quarterback, 2013 Walter Payton Award winner Jimmy Garoppolo from Eastern Illinois, was named the offensive most valuable player. Its been great being here, its been an honor, its been interesting and a good experience so far, Zenner said. I think Im doing OK. The interviews go pretty fast because I dont have any, like, previous arrests or anything to explain. On the field Monday, I was a little rusty, but yesterday I had a better practice. So, hopefully, Illl have another good one today.dddddddddddd It takes a little bit to get used to. I think everyone did well in college. But I was part of a high school all-star team, so Ive been in a similar situation. Its the same thing as getting to a college for the first time. Everyone was the big dude in high school. Its a similar feel except at a higher level. While Zenner is focused on fulfilling his NFL dream - he also will participate at the leagues annual scouting combine in Indianapolis next month - he has a pretty good fallback plan. As part of the National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete Class, an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship awaits him for medical school. The inaugural recipient of the Mickey Charles Award, which honors academic achievement by an FCS student-athlete, Zenner carried a 3.86 grade point average before completing his undergraduate work at SDSU last month. But, oh, does the Minnesota native ever wish he could find time to get to the beach this week. I want to take advantage of it, but I wont have time today, he said. Maybe tomorrow, I might. West Hams co-chairman David Sullivan has apologised to Manchester United after their team bus was attacked on Tuesday night. The bus was pelted with bottles and cans as it was held up for 50 minutes around half a kilometre from the Boleyn Ground ahead of the last game at the stadium, which West Ham won 3-2.Speaking before the extent of the trouble became apparent on Tuesday evening, Sullivan initially complained that Manchester United should have allowed more time to get to the ground, and suggested the behaviour of Hammers fans was no more than over-exuberant. The Manchester United team bus was attacked on its way to the Boleyn Ground But on Wednesday, he said: If we were to have scripted how our final game at the Boleyn would have played out, it wouldnt have been much different to last nights match. The West Ham family then all celebrated our legends and former players together in what was a truly fitting ceremony to say goodbye to our home of 112 years. Phil Thompson thinks the ugly scenes before West Hams game with Manchester United ruined the occasion Sadly, the actions of a very small minority of people outside the ground prior to kick-off risks overshadowing those celebrations. I want to be clear - their behaviour was completely unacceptable and does not represent our club or our values. When I was asked about the incident prior to yesterdays game, I was unaware of the damage that had occurred to the Manchester United team bus. I want to apologise to Manchester United for that damage and assure them that we will be doing all we can to track down those responsible and ban them for life. Watch from inside the Manchester United team coach as it was attacked on its way to the Boleyn Ground This morning, I have already tasked my senior team to work with the police to identify them, as their behaviour belongs in the past and not in a future that promises so much for our great club.I truly hope that, in due course, we will look back on what happened in the stadium rather than what happened outside and remember our farewell to the Boleyn for all the right reasons. Watch the West Ham squad say farewell to the Boleyn Ground The FA will also investigate incidents before and during the game.Footage apparently taken by Manchester United player Jesse Lingard showed the players taking refuge in the aisle down the centre of the bus as bottles and cans smashed against the windows. Souness: Ban morons Graeme Souness wants to see people who attacked bus banned forever Items were also thrown inside the stadium and the FA will look at the matter in closer detail. On the way to the ground, Sky Sports News HQ understands that the Manchester United team bus was just a couple of hundred metres behind the West Ham team coach. But around half a kilometre from the stadium, the Man Utd bus was held up for around 50 minutes by the crowds. A woman and a child are shielded by fans as violence erupts SSNHQ also understands Manchester United received no warning about the congestion - and therefore the potential for delays - and when it became clear they would not make it to the ground on time, it was the club who contacted the league.A statement from the FA was released after the Premier League match, which ended in a Hammers victory after Winston Reid headed home 10 minutes from time. The FA will investigate the incidents at the Boleyn Ground It read: The FA strongly condemns the unsavoury incidents this evening involving both the Manchester United team coach outside West Ham Uniteds Boleyn Ground and objects thrown from a section of the home support during the game.We will work closely with both clubs and the Metropolitan Police to fully investigate these matters. Winston Reid scored the winner as West Ham won the match 3-2 The Metropolitan Police confirmed on Wednesday morning that four officers suffered injuries during the trouble outside the ground. No arrests have been made so far in connection with the criminal damage caused to the coach. Enquiries are ongoing, the force confirmed.Three men were arrested during the course of the match: A 20-year-old man arrested on suspicion of affray; a 47-year-old man and an 18-year-old man were arrested for pitch incursion. They have all been taken to an east London police station for questioning. Hammers farewell A round-up of events at the final match at the Boleyn Ground The Met would not reveal how many officers they had on duty. They told SSNHQ that matches are policed on a grading system, but would not confirm what grade the match was.The Met would only say that an appropriate policing plan was in place and that the incident is being fully investigated. The kick-off to the match was delayed by 45 minutes because of Manchester Uniteds difficulties getting to the ground. West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady hit out at the attack on the Manchester United bus On Wednesday morning, West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady used Twitter to condemn the attack on Uniteds bus.I, the Board and everyone at West Ham United totally condemn the unacceptable behaviour we saw outside the ground last night, Brady wrote.West Ham is a family club and the vast majority of fans attended Tuesdays Final Game to respectfully say Farewell Boleyn. Seats were damaged inside the ground on Tuesday night Those who chose to behave unacceptably will be dealt with in the strongest way possible, with life bans for those guilty of violence. The events in the stadium last night were incredible and it would be a shame if the actions of a mindless few outside overshadowed them.Their behaviour was unacceptable and wont be stood for. But my overriding memory will not be of them but of a fitting farewell to the Boleyn. David Gold wants West Hams last game at the Boleyn Ground to be remembered for what happened on the pitch Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney spoke to Sky Sports after the bus finally reached the ground. It wasnt nice. The coach got smashed up, but we are here now, Rooney said. Im sure youll see the images. Its not for me to say, but it was disappointing of course. Its a big night for West Ham, but Im sure West Ham as a club will be disappointed with what the fans have done.West Ham boss Slaven Bilic intimated after the game that it was a lack of policing which had led to the incident. That is not a question for me, he replied when asked about the pre-match trouble. It was strange for me, I dont want to teach lessons to the people in Canary Wharf. In Canary Wharf if you poke your nose you have two policemen surround you saying you cant do that. Here you have a football game, 50,000 people on the street, that is kind of strange to me. Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The irony is almost too good. The unbalanced schedule in the 10-team Missouri Valley Football Conference prevented its co-champions, Illinois State and North Dakota State, from facing each other during the regular season. They will be dance partners in the end, however. The two Missouri Valley teams will square off Jan. 10 in the FCS championship game at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. North Dakota State is the pre-eminent FCS program and will try to win an unprecedented fourth straight title with its stifling defense. But Illinois State, in NDSUs shadow all season, has the size and athleticism to make this perhaps the Bisons toughest opponent in Frisco. The Bison beat Sam Houston State from the Southland Conference in 2011 and 12, and Towson from CAA Football to end last season. North Dakota State has won the last three meetings, including 28-10 last season. Its probably the matchup both teams wanted when the 24-team playoffs began Thanksgiving Weekend. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- No. 5 seed Illinois State (13-1) 21, No. 1 seed New Hampshire (12-2) 18 Durham, NH - If ever there was doubt about the Missouri Valley Football Conference being the top conference in the FCS, Illinois State provided a reminder on Saturday. The Redbirds rallied past top-seeded New Hampshire, 21-18, with two fourth- quarter touchdowns in the FCS semifinals and gave the Missouri Valley both national finalists. The Jan. 10 title game in Frisco, Texas, will be a fitting end to the 24-team playoffs as it matches fifth-seeded Illinois State (13-1) against second-seeded North Dakota State (14-1), which will try to win an unprecedented fourth straight FCS title. The two teams were crowned Missouri Valley co-champions after not facing each other in the regular season. Illinois State qualified for the championship game for the first time with a clutch fourth-quarter performance after being limited by UNH to only two field goals in the first three quarters. Running back Marshaun Coprich scored on a 2-yard run in the first minute of the fourth quarter to pull the Redbirds within 18-13. Quarterback Tre Roberson then capped their next possession with a go-ahead 47-yard touchdown run with 7:55 left. When Jon-Marc Anderson ran in the two-point conversion, they had a 21-18 lead. New Hampshire (12-2), the CAA Football champion, reached Illinois State territory on its next drive, but was stopped on downs with 4:08 remaining. Coach Brock Spacks Redbirds then converted two first downs to run out the clock. The Redbirds lived dangerously in their first-ever meeting with New Hampshire after having come into the game with a 40.5-point average. Roberson, a junior transfer from Indiana, had accounted for 36 total touchdowns in their first 13 games, but was limited to one touchdown run while totaling 373 yards (278 passing, 95 rushing). Coprich had rushed for over 100 yards in each game and entered with an FCS-high 2,089 yards and 26 touchdowns, but he was held to 79 yards on 24 carries. Under Sean McDonnell, who won the Eddie Robinson Award for the second time in his 16th season at UNH, the Wildcats had a 14-game winning streak and appeared to be in control of the game until Illinois State began to wear them down with bigger size and Robersons dual-threat skills. Their two touchdown drives went for 84 and 89 yards. Lechein Neblett was Robersons favorite target with eight receptions for 147 yards. Defensive end Teddy Corwin led the defense with a career-best 12 tackles, while defensive tackle Collin Keoshian added six stops, a sack, a tackle for loss and an interception of UNH quarterback Sean Goldrich. Goldrich was 19-for-33 for 214 yards, adding 17 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Nico Steriti rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, while All-American wide receiver R.J. Harris had six receptions for 68 yards, but was helped off the field twice during the game. New Hampshire, appearing in the playoffs for the 11th straight season - the current active high - took a 15-6 lead into halftime after Illinois State was plagued by missed opportunities in the first half. The Redbirds reached the UNH red zone four times yet came away with only two field goals by Nick Aussieker, who also missed an attempt. The big mistake came late in the first quarter when at the end of an 8-yard run Roberson fumbled the ball away to UNH cornerback Dougie Moss while spinning into linebacker Akil Anderson at the 1-yard line. The Wildcats went on a 96-yard scoring drive from there and Steriti reached the Illinois State end zone on a 6-yard draw up the middle early in the second quarter. Andy Vailas then ran in the two-point conversion to put the Wildcats ahead 15-3. Earlier in the first quarter, New Hampshire took a 7-3 lead when Goldrich scrambled into the Redbirds end zone for a 3-yard score. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Friday Night No. 2 seed North Dakota State (14-1) 35, Sam Houston State (11-5) 3 Fargo, ND - Sam Houston State might have won a national title or two and be headed back to the FCS championship game for more. If, that is, the Bearkats success in the postseason hadnt been occurring during North Dakota States four-year dynasty. The Bison did it again to Sam Houston Friday night as senior running back John Crockett totaled 232 yards from scrimmage and scored three touchdowns in eliminating the Bearkats, 35-3, in the FCS semifinals at the Fargodome. Next up for the second-seeded Bison (14-1) is a return to the national championship game in Frisco, Texas, where on Jan. 10 they will try to win an unprecedented fourth straight FCS title against fellow Missouri Valley Conference co-champion Illinois State (13-1). The first two of North Dakota States three straight wins in the national final came against Sam Houston. The Bison are a combined 57-3 over the last four seasons, and their senior class has the chance to finish with more national championships than losses in their career. Only two other FCS programs, Eastern Kentucky (1979-1982) and Youngstown State (1991-1994), have advanced to four straight title games. The visiting Bearkats (11-5) from the Southland Conference had hoped for a different result under their first-year coach K.C. Keeler, who had led Delaware to the FCS title in 2003 as well as two other championship appearances. But the Bison, after playing poorly on offense in first half, ran away from the Bearkats behind Crockett (166 rushing yards, 66 receiving) and their powerful offensive line as well as a defense that slowed down Sam Houstons speed in the skills positions. The Bison extended their playoff winning streak to 15 games and their home winning streak to 23. North Dakota State managed only 99 yards in the first half while taking a 7-3 halftime lead, but the Bison nearly matched that total on their second drive of the third quarter when they began to take control of the game. On the third play, Crockett went undefended coming out of the backfield for a 35-yard reception from quarterback Carson Wentz. On the next play, Crocketts backup, King Frazier, sliced through the Sam Houston defensive line for a 33- yard touchdown run which put the Bison ahead 14-3 midway the quarter. On the first play of North Dakota States next drive, Crockett went around left end to explode for a 55-yard touchdown run which extended the lead to 21-3 with 6:52 remaining in the quarter. That margin is usually insurmountable for North Dakota State, but for good measure, Crockett scored on a 10-yard run early in the fourth quarter before Wentz connected with R.J. Urzendowski for a 14-yard touchdown pass with 3:18 left to play. In the statement performance by coach Chris Kliemans squad, the Bison outgained Sam Houston by a decisive 217 yards to 49 in the third quarter and 398-338 overall to end the Bearkats eight-game winning streak. The Bisons improved offensive success in the second half was welcomed after they clung to the 7-3 halftime lead. After the first three Sam Houston possessions didnt produce a first down in the first quarter, the Bison ran off a nine-play, 68-yard scoring drive for a 7-0 lead. Crockett caught a 31-yard reception on the drive and then went off right tackle to ease into the Sam Houston end zone from 3 yards out with 3:52 left. Sam Houston quarterback Jared Johnsons 39-yard pass to Gerald Thomas to the Bison 11 on the first play of the second quarter set up the Bearkats for their only score, Luc Swimberghes 22-yard field goal which completed a 15-play, 82- yard drive and pulled them within 7-3 with 13:37 left in the first half. Johnson, facing great pressure by Bison pass rushers, was 20-for-31 for 227 yards and was picked off in the fourth quarter by linebacker Nick DeLuca (13 tackles), and he added another 66 yards on 25 carries. Wentz was 13-for-19 for 179 yards and one interception in the win. Bison defensive end Kyle Emanuel, the 2014 Buck Buchanan Award winner, had a career-high 11 tackles with 2 1/2 sacks, tying the schools career record of 41 sacks set in 1974 by Jerry Dahl and tied in 1990 by Phil Hansen. Laurent Duvernay-Tardif has become a master of time management. This off-season, the McGill Redmen offensive tackle/medical student has deftly juggled his schedule to accommodate working 60-plus hours a week in the pediatric emergency ward at Montreal Childrens Hospital, working out, playing football in Florida and travelling across the U.S. for individual sessions and visits with NFL officials. On Friday and Saturday, hell spend some well-earned down time watching television to learn where his football future lies. The six-foot-five, 314-pound Duvernay-Tardif is projected to go anywhere between the third and seventh rounds of the NFL draft, which begins Thursday night with the first round. The second and third rounds will go Friday, with the final four being held Saturday. "Ive enjoyed every moment of this process," the articulate Duvernay-Tardif said in a telephone interview. "Its been really intense but at the same time its amazing to think I might play in the NFL, which is a dream. "This process isnt one every 23-year-old gets to go through and I believe the interviews alone are something that will help me in my life. Ive really enjoyed it." Duvernay-Tardif, a converted defensive lineman, has been firmly entrenched atop the CFL central scouting bureaus list of the top-15 prospects for the May 13 draft. But the native of St. Hilaire, Que., has seen his NFL stock skyrocket following his pro day in Montreal in March. Auditioning for nine NFL teams -- Oakland, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Arizona, New York Jets, Green Bay, Chicago, San Francisco and Buffalo -- and four CFL clubs -- Montreal, Calgary, Toronto and Ottawa -- the two-time All-Canadian was impressive in posting a 40-yard dash time of 4.94 seconds, a 31.5-inch vertical and 34 reps in the bench press. Duvernay-Tardif wasnt invited to the NFL combine but those numbers were as good as any offensive lineman who tested in Indianapolis. NFL draft guru Mike Mayock, a former Toronto Argonauts defensive back, says Duvernay-Tardif -- who was featured in Sports Illustrated in March -- has definitely impressed. "I think Duvernay-Tardif has gone from an afterthought to a solid fourth- or fifth-round developmental project with starter skills," he said. Gil Brandt, the former Dallas Cowboys player-personnel director, also sees the towering McGill star being drafted. "I would imagine that a team will take a chance on him around the sixth or seventh round and hope to turn him into an NFL player," Brandt wrote in his blog on the NFLs website. However, Duvernay-Tardif isnt the only Canadian garnering NFL interest. Also highly regarded is Brent Urban, a six-foot-seven, 298-pound defensive tackle from the University of Virginia who was a 2013 second-round pick of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Urban, of Mississauga, Ont., was a two-year starter for the Cavaliers who was invited to this years Senior Bowl but missed the game due to injury. Injuries are the biggest knock against Urban but teams definitely like his ability in a 3-4 defensive scheme (three down linemen, four linebackers). "The Urban kid is interesting," Mayock said. "I wanted to see more of him at the Senior Bowl and he got hurt. "The five technique is probably his best position, a 3-4 defensive end in a 3-4 defence. I think he can go in the third round. I think hes a big, strong kid. Hes stout. In addition to playing that five technique, he could probably move inside also. So I like him and I think theres some significant upside there." Last year, Rice tight end Luke Willson, a native of LaSalle, Ont., was the lone Canadian drafted, going in the fifth round to the Super Bowl-champion Seattle Seahawks. In 2012, a record four players from Canada were selected. Three Canadians -- defensive linemen Tyrone Crawford of Windsor, Ont. (third round, Dallas) and Christo Bilukidi of Ottawa (sixth round, Oakland) and centre Philip Blake of Toronto (fourth round, Denver) -- were drafted. So was Akiem Hicks, an American defensive lineman who played at the University of Regina (third round, New Orleans). Other Canucks who could hear their name called include Winnipeg natives T.J. Jones, a receiver at Notre Dame, and John Urschel, an offensive lineman at Penn State, as well as Oregon linebacker Bo Lokombo, of Abbotsford, B.C. Duvernay-Tardif, Canadian university footballs top lineman in 13, performed at his pro day weighing 298 pounds, some 17 pounds under his playing weight at the East-West Shrine Bowl in January. But that was by design so Duvernay-Tardif could be quicker and more explosive in testing. "There are many NFL teams that like bigger offensive lineman and others like the Philadelphia Eagles who like offensive linemen to be a bit smaller and quicker," he said. "I think I was able to show I could be both kinds of player." Duvernay-Tardif said he visited with nine NFL teams following his pro day, with many curious how he can juggle football with his heavy academic load. During the season at McGill, Duvernay-Tardif had a limited practice schedule because of his studies, meaning he had to be imaginative in order to keep up. "I think most teams believe being involved in medicine is a plus but they want to know why and how youre able to manage that," he said. "I had to tell teams I was watching a lot of film by myself and having Facetime meetings with my coach to prepare for games because I wasnt able to attend every practice. "But when its time to go to the board and draw concepts and schemes and explain them, I can do that because I think medicine has helped me become a cerebral guy and able to process information." However, not all the questions Duvernay-Tardif faced dealt with football. "All the questions about drugs and arrests are kind of (out there) for me but I guess its a reality of professional football," he said. "But every time they did, I was like, What? For sure, no, I am not doing coke (cocaine) or anything like that." For prospects like Duvernay-Tardif, the draft culminates months of uncertainty and seemingly endless testing and intense questioning. However, Duvernay-Tardif wont be content just hearing his name called and signing an NFL contract. "The draft is important and will be a great moment," he said. "But at the same time if I go to a team and get cut during training camp I wouldnt have done anything. "My main focus will be going to training camp and working hard to make the team." Forty games into Tannehills career, hes making a better impression.Over the past five games, Tannehill has a passer rating of 104.1 while completing 68 per cent of his attempts and averaging 8.2 yards per attempt. He has led the Dolphins (5-3) to three consecutive victories, and theyre above .500 at midseason for the first time since 2003.Hes the reason were playing well, guard Mike Pouncey said.Ryan is doing a great job for the last four or five weeks, receiver Mike Wallace said. Hopefully he can keep it up. Everybody knows he has the potential, man.Tannehill has received informal mentoring from Marino, who was hired in August as a special adviser to the team owner, and has heard words of encouragement from Griese, a broadcast analyst for the team. But the biggest reason for Tannehills recent improvement might be his increasing familiarity with the offence installed by first-year co-ordinator Bill Lazor. There is a comfort level, Lazor said, in the fact that all the different options that occur on some of these pass plays, hes just had a chance to see them, so he isnt surprised when they happen. As a result, Tannehill said its easier for him to review his own work lately. He converted from receiver to quarterback as a junior at Texas A&M and is still learning the position.Im not where I want to be at by any stretch, but Im progressing, he said. Im seeing improvements. I see better throws and see the ball coming out quicker.Lazors game plans lately have taken advantage of Tannehills athleticism by mixing rollouts, read options and short passes to a diverse cast of receivers. He struggles with his accuracy on deep passes, so Lazor has reduced the number of long throws in recent games. The Dolphins play Sunday at Detroit. Lions coach Jim Caldwell said his team will be braced for a quarterback whos on a roll — and can run.I had a chhance to watch him as a college player and found him to be an unusual cat, one of those guys who has a real good presence, whos adept at running and throwing, Caldwell said.dddddddddddd. He keeps his eyes downfield and can hurt you on the flank, which he has done time and time again.Tannehill is averaging 6.8 yards per pass, which ranks 28th in the league, but 7.9 per rush. He has rushed for more yards this season (245) than Marino totalled in his career (87).Thanks to a much-improved offensive line, Tannehill is also benefiting from the best pass protection of his three-year career. He has been only sacked 17 times, compared with last years franchise record 58.But six weeks ago, there was speculation Tannehill might be on the verge of losing his job. Following a dismal loss to Kansas City, coach Joe Philbin declined to give an embattled Tannehill a public vote of confidence, fanning a brief quarterback controversy.Tannehill conceded the situation bothered him, and Philbin eventually acknowledged he mishandled the situation and created a locker room distraction. But while Tannehill has since played much better, he repeatedly denied the tempest served as a catalyst.I just think the more we play in this offence and the more comfortable I get, and the more the guys around me get comfortable, you see guys making plays all over the field, Tannehill said.He quashed the talk of a change at quarterback by throwing for 278 yards in a rout of Oakland. He went 25 for 32 in an easy victory at Chicago. And last week he had perhaps his best game yet, throwing for 288 yards and three scores in a 37-0 win over San Diego. We got worked over, Chargers linebacker Andre Gachkar said. Not a lot of quarterbacks in the league can make some of the throws he made.Marino and Griese might agree; both are fans of Tannehills work. But a problem could arise if they ever offer him conflicting advice.I cant choose between those two, Tannehill said. Theyre both Hall of Famers.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL___Follow Steven Wine on Twitter: http://twitter.com/Steve_Wine ' ' '
ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The Raiders agreed Saturday on a two-year deal to keep free-agent safety Usama Young after an injury-shortened first year in Oakland. Agent Andy Simms said on Twitter that Young will sign the deal to stay in Oakland. The Raiders have not made an announcement because the contract has not yet been signed. Oakland also formally announced that running back Darren McFadden signed his one-year contract to return to the team. Young joined Oakland last season on a one-year deal with expectations to become the starting free safety. But a little more than a month after signing Young, the Raiders signed Charles Woodson to a one-year deal to fill that spot. Young moved into a backup role and played well when he got his chance on defence and special teams. He started once in his 12 games before being placed on injured reserve with a neck injury in December. With Woodson a free agent and uncertain to return to Oakland, Young could get another chance to start this season. The 29-year-old Young had one interception, three passes defenced and 2 1/2 sacks last season with the Raiders, playing about one-quarter of the defensive snaps when healthy. Young spent his first four seasons in New Orleans when Oakland coach Dennis Allen ran the secondary for the Saints. The two won a Super Bowl in New Orleans following the 2009 season. Young then played two years in Cleveland before joining Oakland. He has eight interceptions, five sacks and 25 passes defenced in 2013 career games. Young is the fifth defensive player signed so far in free agency by the Raiders, joining defensive linemen Justin Tuck, LaMarr Woodley and Antonio Smith and cornerback Tarell Brown. While Oakland is a rebuilding process following 11 straight non-winning seasons and two years of being severely hampered by the salary cap, their moves so far on defence have been mostly short-term fixes. All five players signed are at least 29 years old. But the Raiders had plenty of holes they needed to fill on defence. Starting defensive linemen LaMarr Houston and Vance Walker have already left as free agents, while Pat Sims and Jason Hunter are still on the market. Cornerback Tracy Porter signed with Washington and fellow starter Mike Jenkins and Woodson are still free agents. Bringing back Young will give some stability to a unit that likely will have new starters at all four defensive line spots, as well as both cornerback positions. The Raiders showed signs of progress on defence early last season before wilting late in the year and allowing the second-most points per game (28.3) in franchise history. Oakland has had two of the three highest-scoring seasons allowed in coach Allens first two years with the franchise. McFadden has struggled to stay healthy since being picked fourth overall out of Arkansas in 2008, missing 29 games in six seasons. McFadden had his biggest success in two years with Hue Jackson calling plays, averaging more than 5 yards per carry in 2010 and 11. But he has averaged just 3.3 yards per carry the past two seasons, second-worst in the NFL in that span to the recently retired Rashard Mendenhall. A move from a zone-blocking to a power scheme was supposed to spark McFadden last season but he rushed for just 379 yards and averaged 3.3 yards per carry in 10 games. But he gets a chance return on a one-year deal that guarantees him only $100,000 and could reach a maximum of $4 million. "There is no place Id rather be," he said. "I want to prove to the team that drafted me that I am a top running back in this league, and I really want to help this team win. Im happy to be back in Oakland." Fake Jerseys Free Shipping . Kari Lehtonen only needed to make 22 saves to record his 23rd career shutout as the Dallas Stars defeated the struggling Oilers 3-0 on Wednesday night. The Oilers (4-14-2) have lost four in a row and gone 1-8-1 in their last 10 to slip to second last in the NHL. It was the third consecutive home game the Oilers have been shut out, setting a franchise-worst record. Edmonton has only scored two goals in its last five home games. "This is extremely frustrating, not to be able to put a puck into the back of the net," said Oilers captain Andrew Ference. "It was one of these games again that you can point to positives, but at the end of the day you have to get the job done and score. Its obviously a huge challenge for everybody to keep their heads up right now and not grip their sticks too tight." Oilers centre Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said their inability to score is almost baffling. "The last three games at home, I dont know what it is," he said. "You are not going to win without scoring. We have to find a way to get the second and third opportunities. "Its not a good sign. I thought we played pretty good in the last three games, we just have to find a way to score. This is not something you want to keep doing, putting yourself in this situation. I cant stress enough how we have to bear down in front of the net." Rich Peverley, Antoine Roussel and Tyler Seguin scored for the Stars (9-7-2), who have won four of their last five games. Stars centre Shawn Horcoff credited Lehtonen for giving his team the time to find their footing in the contest. "Hes one of the best in the league and he gives us a chance to win like that every night," said Horcoff. "I think in the first, we started real slow and we gave up a number of key opportunities and he made a couple of real, big saves that allowed us to get our feet. Once we settled in a little bit, we were able to take the game over." There was a good pace to start the game as the Stars controlled much of the early play, but the Oilers had by far the best chance to that point when Jordan Eberle got the puck in tight in front of the net, only to robbed by an impressive glove save by Lehtonen. Edmontons Sam Gagner hit the crossbar two minutes later. The game remained scoreless through thhe first with the Stars getting 11 shots on Edmonton goalie Devan Dubnyk and the Oilers responding with nine.dddddddddddd After the Oilers continued to squander power-play opportunities, including a lengthy 5-on-3 early in the second, Dallas took a 1-0 lead. Peverley got a shot away and was then able to outmuscle defender Jeff Petry to get to his own rebound and chip his fourth of the season past Dubnyk from the doorstep. The Stars came close to taking a two-goal lead on a power play with six minutes left in the second, but Cody Eakin rang a shot off the post. Edmonton survived a pair of 5-on-3 penalty kills before the midmark of the third period and even a penalty-shot attempt by Valeri Nichuskin with three minutes remaining. But the Oilers couldnt get the equalizer they needed before Seguin dumped a shot from his knees in his own zone into an empty net to give the Stars the 2-0 lead. "I was tired and I aimed for the net," Segiun said of his eighth goal of the season. "If it missed, I didnt care at that point. It was one of those shifts where we were out there for a solid minute at least. They were making some good plays and I just wanted to get it out." Roussel added yet another empty netter to ice the game. The Stars are right back at it on Thursday night as they play the second game of a three-game road swing in Calgary. For her fifth victory of this campaign -- but the first since Lake Louise, Alberta, in early December -- Gut clocked 1 minute, 27.81 seconds down the Olympia delle Tofane course. Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein finished second, 0.12 seconds behind, and Maria Hoefl-Riesch was third, 0.61 back, to maintain her lead in the overall World Cup standings. "Its important to think about skiing and not the result," Gut said. "At the start of the season there was talk about the overall and all those things and I couldnt think about skiing. "I just have to ski the way I can, then I can have a good result," Gut added. "Today it was just me and the slope." This race concluded a run of four speed events in four days, and Weirather was a contender each day. Her results were fourth, second, third and second. "Im proud of my consistency and the ability to perform well in every race," said Weirather, the daughter of champion skiers Hanni Wenzel and Harti Weirather. "Thats something new for me." A combination of strong wind and a tough course, set by Tina Mazes coach, Mauro Pini, led to 19 racers failing to finish. Light was also a factor, as the sun ducked in and out of clouds. Olympic champion Andrea Fischbacher of Austria crashed and slammed into the safety netting but got right back up and skied down without major injury. Maze, who won Saturdays downhill, finished fifth.dddddddddddd The tailwind was so strong when Hoefl-Riesch came down that the German was nearly blown off course over the final jump. Hoefl-Riesch landed outside the blue lines painted onto the snow to help guide skiers and had to rapidly change direction to clear the last gate. "I was just happy when I went over the finish line because it was a hard fight for me on the bottom," Hoefl-Riesch said. Other skiers were slowed by a headwind as the conditions constantly shifted, at times making the banner hanging over the finish line billow in the wind. When the winds finally calmed down, it enabled Marusa Ferk of Slovenia to finish 11th with the No. 49 bib. Chemmy Alcott of Britain, the next skier down, placed 23rd for her first World Cup points since rejoining the circuit this week after leg surgery. The top Americans were Stacey Cook in 13th and Julia Mancuso in 16th. In the overall standings, Hoefl-Riesch holds a 128-point lead over Weirather. In the super-G ranks, Gut leads by 38 points over Weirather with only one more super-G remaining -- at the World Cup finals in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, in March. The womens circuit moves to Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, for a giant slalom and slalom next weekend -- the final events before the Sochi Games open Feb. 7. Gut will be a threat in multiple events in Sochi. She said shes most excited about giant slalom but shell also be a contender in downhill and super-combined. "Im going to try to be like Bode (Miller) in the super-combined at the Olympics," Gut said. ' ' '
DENVER -- Drew Stubbs had a tiebreaking RBI single in the 12th inning to lift the Colorado Rockies past the San Diego Padres, 7-6, on Saturday night. D.J. LeMahieu doubled off Jesse Hahn (7-4) to start the 12th and Charlie Culberson sacrificed him to third. Hahn then intentionally walked Charlie Blackmon and San Diego manager Bud Black aligned three defenders between third and second base in hopes of cutting off any grounder and getting the runner at the plate. But Stubbs singled sharply down the third base line and into left field, allowing LeMahieu to score the winning run and send the Padres to their fourth loss in a row. Nick Masset (2-0) picked up the victory with an inning of scoreless relief. Justin Morneau finished with four hits, including a home run, and two RBIs for the Rockies. LeMahieu added a two-run single as Colorado won for the fourth time in five games. Joe Wieland had a rocky return to the big leagues after a nearly 2 1/2-year absence following reconstructive right elbow surgery. He allowed four runs on seven hits in 2 1-3 innings in his first appearance since May 6, 2012, against Miami at Petco Park, but did not figure in the decision. Jorge De La Rosa, who signed a two-year contract extension earlier this week, left in the sixth with a 6-3 lead but the Rockies bullpen couldnt hold it. The Padres evened the score at 6-all in the eighth on former Rockie Seth Smiths RBI single off reliever Rex Brothers. McKenry homered off Weiland in the second and tacked on an RBI single during a three-run third that also included Morneaus two-run shot for his 15th homer of the season. San Diego, blanked in a 3-0 loss the night before, broke through in the fourth on the first of two RBI singles by Jedd Gyorko. Tommy Medica homered to start the fifth, and pinch-hitter Cory Spangenberg had a two-run homer off reliever Tommy Kahnle in the seventh, pulling the Padres to within a run. MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Los Angeles Clippers tightened their defence waiting for the offence to come around. The result was a second-half burst with a strong push from the reserves to lead Los Angeles to a 101-81 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday night. "I looked up at one point, and we were shooting like 28 per cent," Clippers forward Blake Griffin said. "Our defence was keeping us there, then we finally took the game over when we started hitting shots. Thats a good lesson for us." Reserves Darren Collison and Jamal Crawford scored 15 points each to lead the Clippers. Chris Paul also had 15 points and eight assists as Los Angeles snapped a two-game losing streak. Griffin added 14 points and nine rebounds, while DeAndre Jordan had 10 points and 14 boards. The performance was a reversal from the previous night when the Clippers lost 107-97 at Atlanta -- an effort coach Doc Rivers called "awful." Rivers credited Griffin and Jordan with stopping the Memphis frontline, particularly Zach Randolph, who was returning from missing two games after ingrown toenail surgery. "I thought those two guys fought hard down low," said Rivers, who recorded his 600th win. "I just thought their leadership defensively was why we won the game." Kosta Koufos led Memphis with 17 points, while Mike Conley had 16 on 6-for-8 shooting. Quincy Pondexter scored 15, and Randolph had 12 points and 12 rebounds, but made only four of his 13 shots. The Clippers shot 13 for 20 in the fourth quarter as Paul and Griffin sat on the bench, leaving the game to the backups. "The Clippers played real well defensively," Koufos said. "They established themselves early in the second half. They hit some tough shots." The Clippers trailed 42-40 at the break before outscoring Memphis 61-39 in the second half while shooting 56 per cent. Los Angeles reserves ended the night outscoring their Memphis counterparts 50-31. "That team has a lot of good players," Randolph said. "They have a lot of good bench players that could be starting." As is the case when the two get together, it was chippy from the start. After meeting in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs the last two years, a rivalry has developed. Early in third, Jerryd Bayless shoved Griffin for a flagrant 1. Then Randolph started mouthing with anyone in a Clippers uniform. And the lobbying for calls from both teams led official Danny Crawford to warn the coaches he had heard enough complaining. In the meantime, the Clippers turned up the defence, enabling them to click off a 21-7 run to open the quarter for a double-digit lead. "I thought the way we responded was good," Griffin said. "There are challenges mentally and physically, and I think that was a mental challenge for us. We were mentally tough in that situation." The rally helped the Clipper outscore Memphis 24-11 in the frame and carry a 64-53 lead into the final quarter. Los Angeles connected on 10 of its first 14 shots in the fourth, continuing to build the lead to as many as 24. Several Clippers players said the frustration from games like the one at Atlanta is they believe in their ability to play good defence. "It would be one thing if we knew were werent capable of it, and we didnt have the bodies and the people to execute it, but we do," Paul said. "We have myself, young, athletic guys that know what were capable of. I may not be athletic, but I am young." NOTES: The road team has won the last five games in the series. Philosophy: it shapes organizations. It dictates the direction a team wants to go. And the philosophy under new Winnipeg Blue Bombers acting general manager Kyle Walters appears to be a drastic shift in thinking from the former regime. “The way we feel now, talking Wade (Miller), Kyle (Walters), and myself, were going to bring guys in,” said head coach Tim Burke of the new acting CEO, GM, and himself. “In the future were going to bring guys in, free agents, who might get cut by another team — theres good guys who get cut by teams.” And it didnt take long for the new philosophy to set in as veteran kicker Sandro DeAngelis was shipped in and started immediately in place of Justin Palardy last week and five-year Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive back Bo Smith was inked to the practice roster early this week. Not to mention the firing of Gary Crowton and promotion of Marcel Bellefeuille into the offensive coordinator role. Everyone around Bombers camp has been careful with their words when speaking about the old philosophy compared to the way the new Miller-Walters-Burke trio will approach things, but they are definitely clear in the changes they want to make. “Were going to build our team and not just rely on bringing our own guys in. If somebody else finds them and develops them, thats fine with us,” added the head coach. “Were constantly looking for other people. If we can do anything to upgrade our team, we will.” Somewhat overshadowed by the change at OC and the perpetual carousel at quarterback, the Blue Bombers defence has also been troubled by the opposition - the air attack in particular. And while the roster appears experienced and talented on that side of the ball, the new philosophy is a welcome one to struggling coordinator Casey Creehan. “When you get injuries in this league its nice to have veteran players that can come and fill in. I mean, its good to get young talent but it takes a while to learn this game. Its different than it is down south. Having to plug young kids in fast, early in the season like weve had to do a couple weeks, is tough.” Creehan, Hamiltons DC last season, is beyond pleased that his roster depth can now be supplemented with players that have competed professionally, like Bo Smith who has 56 CFL games under his belt. “Competition, in my opinion, is the best thing in the world. It makes us all better. It makes us better in any profession, so when theres a guy in here thats played at a high level, sure people are looking over their shoulders. And thats OK because its a results-based business and all of us have to perform.” Notes: Receiver Chris Matthews, who has battled a troublesome back since training camp, is out for 4-6 weeks after tearing ligaments in his foot. Doug Pierce will check in for him… Bellefeuille has swapped Clarence Denmark and Jade Etienne, with Etienne now lining up at wideout while Denmark moves back to the slot where he has found his most success over the past two seasons… Max Hall will make a consecutive start at quarterback as Bellefeuille continues to assess his options at pivot… Former Winnipeg head coach Paul LaPolice had some insightful comments on the CFL on TSN pregame show this week about the former general managers philosophy: ““I could talk a week about this… I didnt have a lot of interviews with Joe Mack besides about five introductory conversations. You dont hit every conversation through there, but when something comes up you have to trust people in their jobs and allow them to do their jobs (with) what has to be done. At times I believed in building a roster a certain way, and if there is a disconnect, thats going to tear apart your team. There was certainly a couple of times that we wanted to sign a couple guys that ( Mack) didnt want to because (he) wanted to go younger…” Yeezy Boost 550 Deutschland . The regular schedule kicked off last Sunday in the OUA conference and is set to start this week in the RSEQ and Canada West. Action begins on Sept. 6 in the AUS. Kennedy, a fourth-year business student from Windsor, claims Week 1 honours on offence for the second year in a row. For the second straight season, the 5-foot-10, 205-pound pivot opened league play with six touchdown passes – tying the school record – and not a single interception to lead his troops to a dominating 78-11 home win against Waterloo, which set a new team mark for most points in a contest. The 2012 OUA all-star completed a remarkable 86 percent of his passes (24 of 28) for 335 yards and also racked up 108 yardss and a major on the ground.dddddddddddd Martin, a third-year kinesiology student from London, Ont., took home the weekly honour on defence thanks to a career-high 12 solo tackles in a convincing 51-24 home victory over Ottawa. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound junior, who amassed 15 tackles all season a year ago, also broke up two passes as the two-time conference champion Marauders tallied their 20 consecutive overall win against OUA opponents. Aprile, a fourth-year consecutive education student from Scarborough, Ont., was the choice on special teams following an outstanding all-around performance in a 52-1 road win over York. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound senior, who finished the contest with a whopping 349 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns, racked up 147 special team yards on only three returns, including a spectacular 115-yard major off a missed field goal late in the first half. In Arizona, the Cardinals lose Tyrann Mathieu for the year with a ACL and LCL knee injury. In Carolina, the Panthers lose Jonathan Stewart with an MCL knee injury. But the most devastating season-ender was Rob Gronkowski and his ACL and MCL knee injury with the New England Patriots. The Patriots will rebound somehow to remain competitive but being competitive and winning in the playoffs are two different tests. Players get injured but for Gronkowski, this is difficult to comprehend and accept. On the positive side, he is a young, fourth-year player and youth and the ability to heal effectively do go together. On the negative, for a young player, Gronkowski has an old body of football battles. Two back surgeries at the University of Arizona, missing his senior year, three arm surgeries over three years with New England and now a major knee surgery that, as we have learned by watching RG3, takes more than six months to recover from. His biggest battle to get back will be that he has to do this on his own and often all alone. Football rehabilitation is not a team sport, it is an individual challenge that you have to look at as a job at which to excel and a time commitment that ends an off-season of enjoyment. Every now and then, I get a streak of jealousy over the amount of money pro football players make and how fast, but then I lose that when I consider how short of a career it is and how fast the injuries can compound. In Cleveland, the most talked about player this week will be Browns defensive back TJ Ward because he is the weapon that took out Gronkowski. Yes, he could have make the tackle higher around the hips but would have probably bounced off the hips and Gronkowski would have made another five yards. Or he could tackled him around the shoulders and been taken for 10 yards trying to wrestle the 66" 260 lbs tight end to the ground. Ward is listed at 510" and 200lbs so it was his only choice to take the legs. If he didnt, he would have been criticized and graded down the next morning in the review of the game. The more negative grades you have, the less significance you have in value. No choice for Ward at that moment in time. Pivotal Discussion I dont know who the best quarterback is in NFL football but of the top four that have won Super Bowls, here is what I think. Tom Brady is the best pressure quarterback in football and has exceptional leadership qualities. What he has been able to do with extreme limitations of time is second to none. With two minutes to go on your own 20-yard line and needing a touchdown, Tom Brady is the best. Peyton Manning is #1 in terms of preparation and in-game adjustment. So many times the best offensive possession for Denver is the first one as that becomes the first points scored in the game. Then as the game moves on, Manning figures it out. What he figures out I am not sure but so many times, the second half is dominated by Denver no matter what has happened in the first half. Nobody can run their offence like Manning. Drew Brees has the best footwork and awareness. Cris Collinsworth showed on Sunday Night Football how Brees goes from one opportunity to another downfield, not only in the game but in the pre-game. Later, it was visually demonstrated how polished and precise his footwork and throwing motion work together. Pocket awareness is having the ability to feel a pass rush but not see it. Some quarterbacks never get it; Brees has mastered it. No one has a better arm or a more relaxed demeanor on the field than Aaron Rodgers. If there is anxiety inside Rodgers in the middle of a game, I dont see it. It amazes me how composed and relaxed he remains from play to play. Confidence yes, ability yes but also a gift of knowing or having the skill to focus on what is important and dismiss what is not in any given moment. And with that gift, he has the most accurate and velocity intense arm. If ARodgers comes back for the Dallas game, everything will change for the Packers. Overall, I pick Aaron Rodgers as my number 1 quarterback. Capital Demise In Washington, you can see the end coming. I dont think players give up on a team, coach or year. The competition for an NFL job is too heavy and everything is on video to be re-evaluated all off-season over and over and over. But I do think players play with different intensity levels depending on weather, opposition, one-on-one competition and free agency. When you give up a run for a touchdown, a pass for a touchdown, a punt for a touchdown and a kick return for a touchdown, there is something deeply wrong. The value of a coach is how the players respond and the Washington Redskins did not. You cant fire 53 players, only the boss. Time To Sit In Denver, I hope the Broncos sit Wes Welker until the playoffs. Within one month, he has been diagnosed with two concussions and both on the same type of pattern, a crossing route in between the hash marks about 10 yards downfield. Thats linebacker territory. Also, I guess the conversation about Peyton Mannings ability to play effectively is cold weather is over. Four touchdowns and 397 yards answered that question against Tennessee . Tough To Watch Finally, the Monday Night Football game was painful to watch for two reasons. First, it was brutally cold and by the fourth quarter, everybody was ready to go home; in the stands, on the field, everybody. Secondly, it was tough to watch the slow but consistent disintegration of the Dallas defence. Salary cap limitations have been a good thing for football as it forces competitive balance but when mismanaged, you see weakness in personnel that is normally depth players who will never be starters. That has caught up to the Cowboys. They can still win the NFC East when they face the Eagles in Philadelphia on December 29, but by no means is it a sure thing based on Monday night. TORONTO -- Toronto Rock forward Garrett Billings, the leading scorer in the National Lacrosse League, will miss the rest of the 2014 season after suffering a torn knee ligament. Billings suffered the injury to his anterior cruciate ligament in Torontos 17-9 road win over Vancouver last Saturday. He was examined by the teams medical staff Wednesday. "It was good to hear today that there doesnt appear to be any further damage beyond the ACL tear," Billings said. "Its a long road back and it will be tough not being on the floor, but Im confident in the other guys in the locker room that we are ready to make a strong push down the stretch." Billings, a 28-year old from Langley, B.C., leads the NLL with 101 points (32 goals, 69 assists) in 15 games. He was on pace for his first scoring title after finishing runner-up the last two seasons. The Rock (6-9) are currently in third place in the East Division. They host Philadelphia this Saturday. General manager Terry Sanderson has yet to announce what roster moves will take place to fill the spot on the active roster that will be vacated by Billings when he is placed on injured reserve. "You cant replace what we have lost in Garrett Billings," said Sanderson. "We will practice on Thursday night and plan to make a decision at that point and be prepared for Saturdays game." You know that Calgary will be the prohibitive favorite and they should be. With 15 regular-season wins and a dominate win over the Edmonton Eskimos, much of the discussion this week will be how can Hamilton even keep it close? I will be surprised if it isnt close. Going into the East finals the Montreal Alouettes were very confident; almost too much so. Often, when you go into a game with bravado and make the statements that Montreal did, the opponent takes it personal and I sense that the Ticats did just that. Mistake by Montreal. The obvious star for the game was Brandon Banks and the smallest player in the game played the biggest role. Jeff Rienbolt, the Ticat special teams coach, also saw his group perform extremely well. It was an example of using your bye week effectively to put in new blocking patterns in the return game and see them work to perfection. The secondary of Hamilton also played well - not just the interceptions but the almost elimination of big plays. Montreal had three tall big-time sprinters at receivers and only once did I see a big play produced of more than 25 yards. Johnathan Crompton did not test the deep ball often but when he did the Ticats covered well. Delvin Breaux in particular was significantly noticeable at cornerback. So much of the success in the playoffs is avoiding mistakes and making plays happen. The two unnecessary roughness penalties on Duron Carter really effected the game. Tim Hortons field for Hamilton has been a major success in so many ways. Now 7-0 in that stadiium it has also become an identity location for the Ticats.ddddddddddddWhen you think of almost the last two years from the University Guelph and Grey Cup representative in 2013 and half a season at McMaster and Grey Cup representative again in 2014, it kind of makes you optimistic for 2015 and all nine games in Tim Hortons Field. Hamilton started the season 1-6, finished the season 9-9 and are now back in the Grey Cup. Well done. For Calgary, the best team won and beat the same team four times. To have a 29-4 lead at half time says your ready to go. Bo Levi Mitchells deep ball was never better and the strategy to go for the kill shot early and often worked out remarkably well. So much emphasis on John Cornish was used for Stampeders advantage early and often. For Edmonton they actually had an excellent year. You take away the four Calgary losses and Edmonton almost dominated everybody and boy did they find a quarterback. I have never played on a broken bone but Mike Rielly did for as long as he could. If he was healthy would it have made a difference in winning. I dont think so, Calgary was ready no matter health or not. An interesting competition will be the Rich Stubler defence against the Kent Austin offence. The Dave Dickenson offence against the Orolndo Stinehouer defence. And can Hamilton control a great running game in John Cornish. I remember what Kory Sheets did in last years Grey Cup and it cant repeat for Hamilton in this years Grey Cup. And I remember what Torontos defence did to the Stampeders offence in the Grey Cup the year before Regina and that cant happen again ether. Hamilton and Calgary, let the week of speculation begin and a new Grey Cup winner be crowned. LOS ANGELES -- While Derrick Rose headed home to Chicago for knee surgery, the Bulls began life without their superstar guard again. The Los Angeles Clippers showed them just how ugly that life could be. Jared Dudley scored a season-high 21 points, Chris Paul added 16 points and 17 assists, and the Clippers jumped all over the Bulls in Roses absence for a 121-82 victory Sunday. J.J. Redick scored 19 points and Blake Griffin had 15 points and 12 rebounds in the Pacific Division-leading Clippers seventh win in nine games. This was no ordinary blowout, either: The Clippers 39-point margin of victory was the largest in franchise history. The Clippers figured Roses latest injury was weighing on the Bulls minds. Los Angeles led for all but the first two minutes, and even the reserves surged ahead by 42 points in the fourth quarter. "We jumped on them so quickly that I thought it had to have had a mental effect," Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. "You dont lose a D. Rose. ... We came out and played unbelievable, and I just thought the mental part of that had to be difficult. Very few teams could have fought through that." Luol Deng scored 22 points as the Bulls flopped in their first game since Rose tore cartilage in his right knee Friday night in Portland. Carlos Boozer and Mike Dunleavy scored 14 points apiece, but the Bulls couldnt keep up defensively with the Clippers -- and the Chicago reserves fell apart while getting outscored 25-9 in the fourth quarter. "Its tough for all of us with Derrick being out like this," said Joakim Noah, who had eight points. "Were just hoping for the best with him, and see how it goes. Derrick is a big part of this team. I know how hard he rehabbed this whole time to be on the court." Kirk Hinrich had nine points and seven assists while starting in place of Rose, who missed last season after tearing a ligament in his left knee. Rose played in just 10 games before getting hurt again, but the Bulls are hoping he wont be out as long this time. "Weve done it before," Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau said, noting Rose has missed much of the past two seasons since his 2011 MVP campaign. "This is year No. 3 now, so weve got experience doing it," he added. "But weve got to get the fight. Thats the first part of it -- the determination, the fight and the will. The core of the team in there is the same core we had last year." While Chicago foundered, Los Angeles finished strong in a stretch of four games in five days, surpassing a pair of 37-point wins by the Buffalo Braves during the late 1970s for the biggest margin of victory in franchise history. The Clippers played back-to-back afternoon home games this weekend, an occasional hazard of sharing a building with the Lakers and the NHLs Kings. But a day after blowing a 20-point lead in a victory over Sacramento, the Clippers showed little fatigue from their packed schedule -- and the starters got the fourth quarter off as a reward. "Its the best game this season, we got the opportunity to sit all quarter," Paul said. "Thats huge for our team. This was our fourth game in five nights. We could have come in with a lot of excuses, but we did what we were supposed to do." Los Angeles got out to an early double-digit lead with sharp perimeter shooting from Redick and Dudley, who combined for 29 points in the first half. The Clippers got remarkable performances from the two new additions to their starting lineup, with Dudley and Redick combining to make 16 of their 21 shots. Dudley had the most impressive game of his first season with the Clippers, hitting four 3-pointers while passing his previous season high for points shortly after halftime. Redick was similarly sharp, providing the consistent perimeter scoring Los Angeles sought with his arrival. "When theyre hitting shots like that, man ... " Griffin said. "Even when theyre not, the pressure they put on a defence is great. That contributes to the whole offence." Antawn Jamison finally made his Clippers debut in their 15th game, hitting a 3-pointer in the third quarter for his first basket of his 16th NBA season. Jamison, who moved down the hallway from the Lakers in the off-season, finished with 11 points in 17 minutes. NOTES: The Clippers surpassed their 33-point victory over the Bulls on Feb. 17, 1981, back when the club played in San Diego. ... Chicago has lost three straight to the Clippers. ... Marquis Teague, designated by Thibodeau as Hinrichs new backup, went scoreless with one assist in 20 minutes. ... MIAMI - The convicted ringleader of a smuggling organization that brought more than 1,000 Cubans into the U.S., some of them baseball players including Texas Rangers outfielder Leonys Martin, was sentenced Monday to more than 14 years in federal prison.U.S. District Judge Joan Lenard rejected a request for leniency by Eliezer Lazo, whom she noted was paid $22,000 a month through the scheme — not counting the percentages of any professional baseball contracts the players signed. Prosecutors say Martin paid the Lazo group $1.2 million after signing with the Rangers in 2011.Thats a lot of money, Lenard said.Lazo, 41, will begin serving the sentence after finishing an unrelated five-year prison term for money laundering in a Medicare fraud case. In the smuggling case, he pleaded guilty in August to extortion conspiracy. The Lazo organization smuggled Cubans by boat to Mexico for $10,000 each, more for the baseball players, according to court documents. They would then usually travel to the U.S. border crossing at Laredo, Texas, and ask to be permitted to stay in the U.S.Under the U.S. wet foot, dry foot policy, Cubans who reach dry land in the U.S. are generally allowed to remain while those intercepted at sea are returned to the communist island. Lazos attorney, William Clay, said many of Lazos customers were overjoyed to make it to the U.S. despite the costs. They had gotten what they bargained for, Clay said. But Assistant U.S. Attorney Ron Davidson said migrants who couldnt pay were held for ransom by armed guards, often threatened and sometimes beaten. Although Lazo himself did not participate in any violence, Davidson said he was well aware it was going on.This man is not a freedom fighter, Davidson said. The case also provided a glimpse into how Mexican drug cartels get their cut of the migrant smuggling business. Court documents show that in the Cancun area, the Zetas cartel charges Cuban smugglers $10,000 per boat and up to $3,000 per migrant to allow them to pass through their territory and assist in paying bribes to local officials. No evidence surfaced in the case that Martin or any of the other valuable Cuban ballplayers were mistreated. Only Martin has been identified by name in the Lazo case, but other Cuban stars such as Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig have also been smuggled through Mexico.Aside from being free from Cuba, baseball players from that country have an incentive to go to a third country such as Mexico before signing MLB contracts. If they came directly to the U.S., they would be subject to the MLB draft and likely sign a less lucrative deal. Going to Mexico first makes them free agents looking for the highest bidder.Martin, a speedy outfielder, signed a five-year, $15.5 million contract with the Rangers in 2011. Last year he batted .274 and stole 31 bases.Clay indicated he may appeal Lazos sentence, calling it unreasonable because Lazo offered to co-operate with investigators before he was indicted and had only a limited role in the extortion. For his part, Lazo apologized for his crimes through a Spanish interpreter.I am very repentant and remorseful for the crimes I have committed, Lazo said. I am so sorry I got involved in these issues._____Follow Curt Anderson on Twitter: http://twitter.com/MiamicurtAaron Rodgers Jersey . -- Jonathan Vilmas season is over and his future on the football field is in doubt.
